Fieldwork and other stuff

Hoi allemaal,

Het voelt alsof het nog maar een even geleden is dat ik de laatste post geschreven heb, maar in de tussentijd is alweer behoorlijk wat gebeurt. Ondertussen ben ik vier weken in het vak en is het nog maar twee te gaan, voordat het alweer afgelopen is. 

Sinds de laatste keer dat ik geschreven heb, is het vak goed en wel begonnen. De eerste week bestond vooral uit heeel veel colleges, de hele dag lang. Uiteindelijk hebben we zelfs op zaterdag nog les gehad, om de laatste voorbereidingen voor het veldwerk te doen. Aangezien de supermarkt om 4 uur sluit op zaterdag, zijn we letterlijk de collegezaal uitgerend om nog boodschappen te doen. Dit was vooral ook belangrijk omdat we die avond Indiaas diner hadden met de klas. Gelukkig hebben we het gered en hebben we na bij te zijn gekomen op de bank, 's avond heerlijk gegeten en een gezellige avond gehad. 

De week erna begon het veldwerk al. Deze keer was het gewoon in de omgeving van Longyearbyen en sliepen we dus gewoon in het studentencomplex. Net als vorige keer bestond het veldwerk uit het opzetten van meteorologische weerstations en meetapparatuur, die we de rest van de week controleerden en uitlazen. Daarnaast moest de data geanalyseerd worden en hebben meetapparatuur op een sneeuwscooter slee gemonteerd en zijn we met sneeuwscooters rond gaan rijden. Dit laatste was natuurlijk zeer vervelend en vereiste dan ook veel zelfopoffering ;). Hoewel het wel anders was om het deze keer gewoon in de omgeving van Longyearbyen te doen, was alsnog wel weer superleuk om te doen. Uiteindelijk ben ik de meeste dagen alsnog bijna de hele dag van 's ochtend vroeg tot 's avonds laat weg geweest. Na een week veldwerk hebben we op zondag alle meet apparatuur weer opgehaald en hebben we het veldwerk afgesloten met bier en pizza in een van de restaurants hier. 

De maandag erop waren we vrij en ben ik met een klasgenoot van afgelopen semester een dag weggeweest op haar sneeuwscooter. Dat was echt echt heel vet en het was ook heel bijzonder om zo ineens een heel stuk meer van het eiland te kunnen zien. Aangezien de zon langzaam terug begon te komen, was er superveel roze licht, wat echt spectaculair was om te zien. Zeer toepasselijk ook, aangezien het Valentijnsdag was. En zeer geslaagd, aangezien ik absoluut verliefd ben geworden...... op de sneeuwscooter! 

De week erna stond vooral in het teken van colleges en werken en data analyse. Helaas heeft corona alleen ook Spitsbergen bereikt en bleek de halve klas positief te zijn. Presentie in de colleges was dan ook niet bijzonder hoog. Een voordeel van dat alle colleges online te volgen waren en opgenomen worden is wel dat dat het een stuk makkelijker maakt om niet naar colleges te gaan :). Bijvoorbeeld omdat je op een hike wil gaan om de zon te zien! Die woensdag ben ik met een paar klasgenoten op een hike gegaan, in de hoop om de eerste zonsopkomst te zien. Hoewel het een supermooie hike was, bleek er meer sneeuw te zijn dan verwacht en waren we uiteindelijk te laat om de zon te kunnen zien. Gelukkig was het ook zonder de zon alsnog wel een hele mooi hike. 

Het plan voor het weekend was om naar de student cabin te gaan, maar dit is helaas niet doorgegaan  vanwege de corona en de angst op een corona uitbraak terwijl we daar zouden zijn. In plaats daarvan zijn we daarom op een hike gegaan naar Trollsteinen. Deze keer keer is het ons gelukt om wel helemaal naar de top te gaan, hoewel het laatste stuk over een richel ging, die toch niet al te breed was. Eenmaal aangekomen op de top hadden we wel de geweldige ervaring om voor het eerst sinds de aankomst in Spitsbergen weer direct zonlicht op ons gezicht te voelen. Na de ervaring om de zon langzaam weg te hebben zien gaan afgelopen semester, was het wel heel bijzonder om de zon zo weer terug te zien. 

Afgelopen week stond daarna vooral in het teken van werken aan het verslag. Helaas heb ik alleen ook corona gekregen. Na een positieve test op woensdag heb ik aan ook een aantal dagen ziek op bed door moeten brengen. Gelukkig is er goed voor me gezorgd en voel ik me ondertussen weer een stuk beter, hoewel ik nog altijd wel wat moe ben en mag ik morgen weer uit quarantaine. 

Dit laatste komt goed uit, aangezien het plan is om morgen met gehuurde sneeuwscooters naar Barentsburg te rijden, een kleine nederzetting zo'n 60 km hier vandaan. Het plan is om daar te overnachten in een hostel, de volgende dag een dagtocht te maken op de scooter en dan weer terug te gaan naar Longyearbyen. Voor de rest van de week moet dan vooral het verslag afgeschreven worden en de week erna is dan het tentamen al. Hierna ga ik nog niet direct terug naar huis, maar zal mijn zus (Astrid) me nog twee weken op komen zoeken. Ik zal dan ook ter zijner tijd nog wel weer van me laten horen.

It feels like it is only a week ago since I wrote my last blogpost, but weeks and a lot of activies have flown by. With four weeks passed, it is only two weeks to go until the course ends again. 

After the last time I wrote the actual course started. This mostly meant a LOT of lectures in the first week. With the setup of the course, pretty much all the lectures of the course were crammed in one week, which meant a lot of long days listening to lectures. Different lecturers than last semester, altough a lot of familiar faces helped with the fieldwork, like Dan, Lukas, Stephan, Thomas and Florina. We actually continued on Saturday with the lessons, where we made the plan for what we wanted to measure for the fieldwork. We ended up almost running out of the lecture in order to be in time for Coop to do groceries for the Indian dinner that night. Altough it was not tacos and not Friday, it tasted amazing and it was supernice. 

The following week was already fieldwork week. The set-up was similar to Kapp Linne, where we set up the instruments on the first day (and second) and then we did data collection the following days. Ofcourse we also had daily briefings with the weather forecast that we made and some of the data that was analysed already. There is chance that I got a bit too excited about the 500 m Arome model that is run for the course and all the cool mesoscale features that I saw. Consequently the weather forecast of my group was maybe about that, instead of just the weather forecast. The experience of the fieldwork was slightly different in the sense that we stayed in Adventdalen and we slept in our own place and according to the schedule we only had fieldwork half the day. I ended up helping with a project some of the time I was off, so I still ended up being away most of the time. Of course the big difference this time was that we had snowscooters!!! Both the data collection and the transects were done by snowscooter, which was a lot of fun! Collecting data from ten thousand TinyTags is not that bad, if you can just drive there by scooter :).

After the first day of profiling, where the winch of the thersonde was of course broken again, the winch actually started working. It is a small miracle. One sad thing is that there was only limited dancing going on during the fieldwork. Only one night, where lasers and fog was used in order to see submesomotions, we ended up having a tiny rave party. And no macarena :(

On the sunday the equipment was picked up again and we traditionally ended the fieldwork with pizza and beer at Barentz. Where we found the teachers, who had exactly the same thought. 

While all my classmates were being hungover the next day, I ended up going on a snowscooter valentinesdate with Charlotte, which was super nice. And I have to say, I've absolutely fallen in love...... with Charlotte's scooter. It is so nice! I'm defenitely in for a second date ;) 

The days afterwards were a bit weird, since covid has finally arrived on Svalbard, so half the course ended up being positive that week. So with just a few people in the classroom we had some lectures and the data analyis started. On Wednesday I ended up skipping the lectures, in order to go on a hike in the hope to see the sun. The plan was to go to Nördenskjolfjellet (I hope I wrote it correctly). Sadly, since we had to rent a rifle and could only leave at 10, we ended up being too late. There was quite a bit of snow on the plateau, which made the crossing of the plateau heavy. At the time of the sunset we were therefore only at the beginning of the ridge. Since there was no wind and it was quite a clear day, it was still supernice though and we did end up enjoying the hike a lot, even though we didn't go to the top. 

For the weekend the plan was to go to the student cabin, but due to covid and the fear of a covid outbreak in the student cabin we didn't end up going. However, we did end up going to Trollsteinen and managed to get all the way to the top this time. Including the very small and shady ridge, you apparently have to go over. Arrived at the top, we were rewarded with the beautiful sight of direct sunlight! On the way back we made a quick stop at the ice caves to warm up and have lunch (in between the tourists also visiting the ice caves). 

Last week was mostly dominated by working on the reports, since the deadline for the draft was this Friday. For the report this time I'm working on LES modeling of Adventdalen and comparing it our measurements. However, Covid hit and after already not feeling great on Tuesday (I thought I was just hungover), I ended up testing positive on Wednesday. Sadly I did end up almost only sleeping for three days, but luckily yesterday I felt better and managed a small walk to the beach (which almost felt like an expedition). Today is already the last day of quarantine and I feel a lot better and ended up working on the report again. Hopefully my energy will return soon and I can go back to running on mountains. For now the plan is to go on a trip to Barentsburg tomorrow by snowscooter, where we will stay for the night and drive to Kapp Linne the next day and then back to Longyearbyen. Wednesday are then the report presentations, after which on Monday the deadline is to hand in the report. Which is already the last week again of the course. After which I will stay a few weeks longer and my sister will come to visit me.
